Your iPad has cellular service, but pages will not load, apps stall, or the status bar says No Service or Searching. Start with the fastest settings checks, then move into plan, SIM, update, and carrier fixes that match current Apple guidance.

1. Refresh the connection with Airplane Mode

A stale cellular connection is the quickest thing to clear.

  1. 1.Open Settings.
  2. 2.Turn on Airplane Mode.
  3. 3.Wait at least 15 seconds.
  4. 4.Turn Airplane Mode off.
  5. 5.Open Settings > Cellular Data.
  6. 6.Turn on Cellular Data.

You can do the same from Control Center: swipe down from the top-right corner, tap Airplane Mode, wait 15 to 30 seconds, then tap Airplane Mode again.

2. Allow the affected app to use cellular data

  1. 1.Open Settings > Cellular Data.
  2. 2.Scroll to the app or service that will not load.
  3. 3.Turn on Cellular Data for that app or service.
  4. 4.Check Wi-Fi Assist in the same list when the problem happens while moving between weak Wi-Fi and cellular.

This is the right check when cellular works in one app or service but not another.

3. Pick the right cellular plan

Multiple plans create a simple problem: the iPad has to use the plan you expect. Only one eSIM can be active at a time.

Open Settings > Cellular Data, then under Cellular Plans or SIMs, tap the plan you want to use. Open Manage [account name] or Carrier Services to check account status from the iPad, then test cellular data again.

4. Activate or transfer the iPad plan

  • To add a plan, open Settings > Cellular Data > Add a New Plan.
  • To scan a carrier QR code, open Settings > Cellular Data > Other, then scan the code or enter the details manually.
  • On iPadOS 17.4 or later, touch and hold a carrier QR code in an email or webpage, then tap Add eSIM > Continue > Add Cellular Plan.
  • To transfer an existing iPad eSIM, first update to the latest iPadOS, then open Settings > Cellular Data > Transfer iPad Plan and tap Transfer beside the line. eSIM Quick Transfer depends on carrier support, so if you do not see Transfer or the transfer will not complete, contact your carrier.
  • To join a supported iPhone plan, open Settings > Cellular Data > Join iPhone Plan, then follow the prompts.
  • To activate through a carrier app, open App Store, download your carrier app, open it, then use the carrier app to buy or activate the plan.

If cellular data never worked on this iPad, or it stopped after moving to a new iPad, fix the plan setup here. If Join iPhone Plan is not shown, turn on Wi-Fi and confirm that the iPhone and iPad use the same Apple Account. Skip older Apple SIM activation instructions: Apple SIM technology stopped activating new cellular data plans on October 1, 2022.

5. Reseat the SIM and check roaming

Use the SIM tray steps only on iPad models with a physical nano-SIM tray. iPad (A16), iPad Pro (M4), iPad Air (M2), and iPad mini (A17 Pro) Wi-Fi + Cellular models and later use eSIM only and have no physical SIM tray.

  1. 1.Insert a SIM eject tool or paper clip into the small hole on the SIM tray.
  2. 2.Remove the tray.
  3. 3.Place the SIM in the tray with the angled corner aligned.
  4. 4.Insert the tray back into the iPad.
  5. 5.Enter the SIM PIN when prompted.

If the iPad still shows Invalid SIM or No SIM, test with another SIM or ask the carrier for a replacement. When traveling, open Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options, then turn on Data Roaming. Roaming charges can apply.

6. Change LTE, 5G, and Low Data Mode settings

  • For LTE, open Settings > Cellular, then turn on LTE.
  • On a 5G iPad, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data, then choose 5G Auto, 5G On, or LTE.
  • For LTE or 4G Low Data Mode, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, then turn off Low Data Mode.
  • For 5G Low Data Mode, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode, then choose Standard or Allow More Data on 5G when available.

After 3G network shutdown issues, update iPadOS first, then check the cellular data mode your carrier supports.

7. Update iPadOS and carrier settings

Apple recommends current iPadOS and current carrier settings for No Service, Searching, and cellular problems.

  1. 1.Back up your iPad.
  2. 2.Plug the iPad into power.
  3. 3.Connect to Wi-Fi.
  4. 4.Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  5. 5.Tap Download and Install, then follow the onscreen steps.

Then check carrier settings. Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About, then install the carrier settings update when prompted. To see the installed carrier settings version, look next to Carrier under eSIM.

8. Remove blockers and reset network settings

  1. 1.Open the VPN, firewall, antivirus, parental-control, or content-filtering app.
  2. 2.Turn off its network features.
  3. 3.Test cellular data.
  4. 4.If the app is unfamiliar or still blocks the connection, touch and hold the app on the Home Screen.
  5. 5.Tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.
  6. 6.Restart the iPad.

VPN, firewall, antivirus, parental-control, and content-filtering apps can block connectivity.

On a personally owned iPad, check removable profiles next. Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile only when that profile is causing the cellular problem. Removing a profile can remove accounts, certificates, VPN, APN, and management settings.

If cellular data still does not work, reset network settings. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN or APN settings not installed by a configuration profile or MDM. Cellular data roaming can be turned off afterward, so recheck Data Roaming when you are traveling.

When the iPad still shows No Service, Searching, Invalid SIM, No SIM, or no cellular data after the reset, contact your carrier. Ask them to verify that the account is active and in good standing, your area has coverage with no outage, the iPad is not blocked or barred, the correct data plan is provisioned, the IMEI is registered when required, and the SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned.

For a school or work iPad, contact the organization before removing profiles or management. Managed iPads can have cellular, eSIM, APN, VPN, filtering, and app-data rules controlled by an administrator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPad show No Service after I turn cellular data on?

Refresh the radios with Airplane Mode, restart the iPad, then install iPadOS and carrier settings updates. If No Service remains, the carrier must check account status, coverage, outages, device blocking, IMEI registration, and SIM or eSIM provisioning.

Why does cellular data work in Safari but not in one iPad app?

The app is blocked from cellular access. Open Settings > Cellular Data, scroll to that app or service, and turn Cellular Data on for it.

Does Reset Network Settings erase photos or apps?

No. Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN or APN settings not installed by a configuration profile or MDM.

Should I delete my iPad eSIM when cellular data stops working?

Delete an eSIM only when replacing or reprovisioning the plan with carrier guidance. Deleting the eSIM does not cancel the carrier plan.

What should I do when my iPad cellular data breaks on a trip?

Open Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming. Then check the active plan under Settings > Cellular Data and contact the carrier if the account or roaming service needs provisioning.
